When John penned Revelation 3:14-22, the Laodiceans had an attitude of self-reliance and said they “had need of nothing”. Why didn’t they see their need for God? Why don’t we see our need for Him?
We may be caught by the cares of this world. If we let them, the material things we can experience will easily divert our focus from what we know is more important. Like the man in Luke 12:20, our things here will be worthless to us on our last day.
We may lose our sense of perspective. We can think that what we have here actually is what we need the most. Like Esau in Genesis 25:27-34, we can trade away what is important in the future — and in eternity — for something that seems valuable now.
We may choose to believe we don’t need God at all. We can be like the fool in Psalm 10 and Psalm 14, deciding to live without God in our thoughts. We can have the idea that we don’t really ever need Him, now or later.
We must take great care in our lives to be sure we don’t lose sight of our one and only true need.
